ロールスロイスの技術者は、旅客機や戦闘機の風防に向かって、死んだ鶏を高速で発射する特殊装置を製作した。
しばしば発生する鳥の衝突事故を模して、風防の強度試験をするためだった。
この発射装置のことを耳にしたアメリカの技術者たちは、
是非それを使って最近開発した高速列車のフロントガラスを試験してみたいと考えた。
話し合いがまとまり、装置がアメリカへ送られてきた。
発射筒から鶏が撃ちだされ、破片飛散防止のフロントガラスを粉々に打ち破り、制御盤を突き抜け、
技術者がすわる椅子の背もたれを二つにぶち割り、後部の仕切り壁に突き刺さった光景に技術者たちは慄然とした。
驚いたアメリカの技術者たちは、悲惨な実験結果を示す写真にフロントガラスの設計図を添えてロールスロイスへ送り、
イギリスの科学者たちに詳しい意見を求めた。それに対するロールスロイスからの返事はたった一行だった。
